Unofficial results from the New York State Board of Elections show that with 126 out of 187 election districts reporting, Byrne has 19,506 votes (58.11 percent) to Higbie's 10,039 (29.91 percent).
A sizable number of ballots, 4,002 (11.92 percent) were left blank. Twelve write-in votes were cast, while six were declared to be void.
Byrne lives in Mahopac while Higbie lives in Yorktown.
Byrne is also running on the Conservative, Independence and Reform Party lines, while Higbie is also running on the Working Families Party line.
The assembly state is being vacated by Republican Steve Katz. The district covers parts of Putnam and northern Westchester counties.
